Gor Mahia Triumphs
Nairobi’s Gor Mahia has clinched the Kenya Premier League title, becoming the third African nation to prematurely end its football season due to the coronavirus outbreak.
In Angola, the top-tier Girabola league will not declare a winner this season, following the decision to nullify the campaign. Mauritius had similarly concluded its football season earlier this month, also without crowning a champion.
This victory marks Gor Mahia’s fourth consecutive championship. At the time the season was halted, they were leading by seven points ahead of Homeboyz, who had a game in reserve, with 11 rounds remaining in the 34-game season.
The championship was awarded to Gor Mahia based on a specific KPL rule, which states that if the season is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, the team leading after 17 rounds, or the halfway point of the season, will be declared champions.
As a result, Gor Mahia FC will be the sole Kenyan representative in the 2020/21 CAF Champions League.
In Angola, there were only five rounds left in the 30-game Girabola season when a meeting of the league's clubs decided not to resume the campaign, resulting in no championship title awarded and no relegation.
Petro Atletico and Primero de Agosto, the top two teams in the standings, will represent Angola in the Champions League, with the country’s higher standing in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) allowing two teams to participate.
Petro Atletico led by three points over Primero, but had also played one more game, setting the stage for a potentially thrilling season finale.
CAF has issued a deadline of May 5th to its member associations, urging them to decide whether they intend to continue with their domestic seasons or opt for an early conclusion to the campaign.
